Dear Friends,

Public hearings on the Falls Lake Rules will be held next week and we need your voice.

Come out and celebrate your right to clean water before celebrating Independence Day. These events are likely to have a lot of industry folks that want the rules to be unsuccessful in caring for this precious body of water, so we need your help.  Hearings will be held in Durham and Raleigh and residents of all ages are encouraged to attend, so forward this message to a friend and ask them to join us too!

Which future do you want for Falls Lake?
    Closed Falls Lake.jpg    falls-lake-nc-1a.jpg
We need people to stand up at these meetings and tell the State why you love Falls Lake and want it to be protected. The Neuse RIVERKEEPER® Foundation will be happy to provide talking points about the rules for those that want them, but it would help just as much for the State to hear stories about how you and your family have enjoyed Falls Lake and want it clean and safe for future use.

Friday Update

Board of Commissioners Friday Update
Friday, June 25, 2010

ITEM 1. WENDELL CONCERT, TONIGHT JUNE 25, 2010
Driven Praise Band, A Christian rock band, will perform tonight at J. Ashley Wall Towne Square (at the corner of Cypress and W. Third Streets) from 6:30-8:30. Bring a lawn chair. The American Legion will sell hotdogs and drinks.
ITEM 2. GREATER RALEIGH BUSINESS BUREAU
Looking for ways to save during these difficult economic times? The Greater Raleigh Business Bureau has put together special offers which include everything from dining, hotel accommodations, parking, etc. that will allow you to enjoy the Triangle on a budget. http://www.visitraleigh.com/visitors/hot_deals

ITEM 3. WENDELL TREE BOARD
The Wendell Tree Board met on Tuesday, June 22, 2010.   Board members discussed the heat and watering of new trees planted at Arbor Day events held recently at Wendell schools. Discussion also included the planting of trees this Fall at the Park, such as shade trees near the ball fields that would provide shade for spectators.  Mr. Tim Kay presented a flag, hat and plaque to the Tree Board for the town’s 27 years of participation in the Tree City USA program.   The next meeting of the board will be in late August with the date and time to be announced. For inquiries and suggestions, please contact Mr. Tim Kay at 366-2266.

ITEM 4. EWTV-DIGITAL ENCODER
East Wake TV will be purchasing a digital Video Encoder in July for the Wendell Board meetings. The Encoder will allow meetings to be streamed from the Wendell Courtroom to EWTV in Knightdale. The encoder will provide a better quality picture as well as reduce problems occurring from defective discs or malfunctioning equipment. The encoder will also eliminate the need to transport the DVD to the station each morning following the meeting. The encoder will provide capability for board meetings to be shown live, if the board chooses to do so.

ITEM 5. CAMP CHOICES - WENDELL POLICE DEPARTMENT
The Police Department has finalized plans for its first camp, “Camp Choices.” The camp will run August 2, 2010 through August 6, 2010. The department is pleased to announce that staff from the Poe Center will be on hand to educate Wendell’s youth on choices and consequences related to tobacco, alcohol, and various other topics. The Poe Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to positively impacting the lives of North Carolina youth through health education.

The Tahoe and trailer that were funded by the ABC board have been fully striped. Color Graphic has developed a logo for our camp and also a theme for our Fatal Vision training. Please look at our new logo’s below. Also attached to the email are pictures of the Tahoe and trailer. The camp has space for 40 participants and a limited number of spaces are available. For more information, please contact St. Wall at the Wendell Police Department at 365-4444.
ITEM 6. TRIANGLE REGIONAL TRANSIT PROGRAM, JULY 14, 2010
The Triangle Regional Transit Program has been established to focus on highway, transit and transportation management alternatives throughout the region. Public meetings have been scheduled throughout the Triangle during the months of June and July. One of six public meetings will be held on July 14, 2010 in the Knightdale Town Hall from 5:30 until 8 pm.

ITEM 7. GOVERNOR’S VOLUNTEER SERVICE AWARDS

The N.C. Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service understands the importance of volunteers making a difference in our community. The nomination deadline for the Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards is August 27, 2010.

Individuals, families, and groups who have addressed a community need or enhanced the quality of life for North Carolinians can be nominated. If you know of a Wendell resident deserving of such recognition, please visit http://volunteernc.org/programs/volunteerAwards.aspx. If you have questions that cannot be answered online, please contact Tim Kelly at (919) 715-2279 or Tim.Kelly@nc.gov.

ITEM 8. HOUSE BILL 681- EXTENSION OF DEVELOPMENT PERMITS

Legislation was just introduced in the N.C. Senate that would extend the grandfathering of approved development permits by an additional two years.

The Permit Extension Act passed last year by the N.C. General Assembly suspended the expiration of development permits that were approved by local governments across the state between 1/1/08 and 12/31/10.  Now there is a proposal to extend this grandfathering for another two years.  The language to do this has been inserted by the Senate into House Bill 683 (see Section 2 at end): http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2009/Bills/House/PDF/H683v2.pdf.

Extending this period for another two years could hinder the ability of local governments to implement updated development standards for these projects and sites.

Dear Friends,

For nearly four years, WakeUP Wake County has been working hard advocating for good growth in Wake County.  Your financial support and volunteerism are making a difference. Our municipal, county and state officials and the public are more aware of the need to manage our drinking water supply better, expand our public transit system, achieve academic excellence in our schools and implement adequate and equitable funding solutions to support rapid growth.

WakeUP Logo

But there is much more to be done.  We hope you can help us achieve our fundraising goal of $40,000 by donating $25, $30 or $40, and consider becoming a WakeUP volunteer.

DOUBLE your money!  If you donate today, your contribution will be doubled...thanks to $10,000 matching grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.  Learn more about growth issues and WakeUP by viewing our new video!

Over the remainder of the year, WakeUP's work includes...

Falls Lake Cleanup. It is now estimated it will cost $1.5 billion to clean up our water supply. WakeUP will continue to be your voice for new state rules to protect our water supply and funding to clean up the current mess.

Transit Planning. Public meetings are being held this summer to brief citizens about a regional transit plan.  These meetings are critical for helping define what our regional transit system will be.  WakeUP will be there to advocate for a multi-modal transit plan that includes expanded and improved bus service, light rail, commuter rail, high-speed rail, local circulators like streetcars and better options for walking and bicycling.

Little River Reservoir. WakeUP will host a major community forum to educate the public about the proposal to develop a new reservoir in the Little River watershed in Eastern Wake. The need, environmental impacts, conservation and costs will all be discussed.

Wake County Public Schools.  WakeUP's new initiative, Great Schools In Wake, will host a major community forum on September 25: Student Achievement: The Next Decade!  It will focus on improving math and science education and ensuring every child graduates --on time and ready for their future.

Please help us make our next four years even more successful by making a generous tax deductible donation to WakeUP Wake County and also consider becoming a WakeUP volunteer.

Sincerely,

Yevonne Brannon,
Chair, WakeUP Wake County Board of Directors
